Day 2 & 3 - Crater Lake NP: sapphire and cold

After spending a great time in Eugene we left for Crater Lake National Park, a little late, as usual. We arrived in the afternoon and after getting out of the car we initially realized, that we climbed to more than 2000 meters above sea level, and it was just a little above freezing. On top of that it was really really windy.

We jumped of the car after reaching the rim of the crater and then we saw this gorgeous lake, having a clear, blue, sapphire color, thanks to being a closed system - there are no inlets nor outlets to/from the lake. All the water there is naturally accumulated from rainfall.

The crater itself emerged in a special way - it's a leftover from volcano Mt. Mazama, that erupted about 7700 years ago and collapsed. It took almost 800 years afterwards to gather enough water to for what today is called Crater Lake.

After seeing some scenic views, we headed to our campground. There we learned, that not only in Yosemite we can expect to meet a black bear, but we can in Crater Lake as well. Fortunately we didn't encounter any.

The next day, while we were preparing to take off for the next leg of our trip (8-hour drive to the San Francisco Bay area), it started raining. We hoped to see more of the lake before we depart, but we could see just the fog for the most park. However we hiked to the lake's surface, to the place where the cruise ship leaves for tours around the lake.

Next stop: Mountain View, CA.
